Other Issues in Media and Society

By visiting the blogs from my classmates I have learned many interesting facts and got to discuss those issues with them.
The first blog I visited was concentrating on violence in the media and was written by Lubos Beseda.
Lubos mentions issues such as terrorist attacks, domestic violence in media and video games. I found this very interesting, because this topic ends to be sometimes overlooked by the society. You can visit this blog on the following address: http://vioelnce-in-the-media.blogspot.cz/

 Another alarming topic was mentioned by Adil Merzlov on his blog about Media and video games. This blogs looks at the video games from a different perspective and reaise questions like: why does the mainstream media hate video games. On the blog concentrating on music and society, Andrea brings up the topic of rude music expressions and disturbing music videos. Samuel Jahoda talks about the problems of minorities in the Czech Republic and he mentions some very interesting facts that I did not know about, such as the event with the boy supposedly beaten up by a group of gypsies. Last but not least was a blog about the dangers of internet for children. Valentina touches on some interesting topics such as the suicidal game called Blue whale and health risks. I found this blog very interesting and worth reading. You can find more on: https://valentinaberger.blogspot.cz/

Introduction The game called "Blue Whale" has been discussed in the media all over the world. Even though the reports are not confirmed, there is a possible link between teenager suicides and this social media challenge. The purpose of this game is completing series of tasks in a 50 day period. Those tasks are dangerous, self-harming and eventually result in making the player kill himself. Social Media and body image The social media are usually filled with many pictures and so-called “selfies” which present unrealistic images to many adolescent girls and boys. These may be the reasons for various eating disorders and low self-confidence, since today’s social media culture tends to be more concerned about physical atributes than the meaningful qualities of a person (Pennington, 2015). To show the disproportions in numbers, according to the surveys made by the University of Texas the average woman is 165 cm tall and weights around 75 kg. How much time do teenagers spend on social media? It is commonly known that people spend a lot of time on social media, watching TV or browsing the internet, but what is the actual time spent online? Recent studies in the United States showed, that teens spend around nine hours on media for their enjoyment (not including school work). There is a big difference between the gender of teenagers which affects the choice of media. Girls usually spend more time on social media (around 40 minutes), while boys tend to play more video games. Teens use social media not just during their free time but also at school or while doing their homework. As it is mentioned in the article by Kelly Wallace: “Nearly two-thirds say watching TV or texting makes no difference and more than 50% feel the same way when it comes to social media” (2015).
